This is the south side of the enormous Katla volcano in Iceland and this time and I'm focusing on ancient floodplains that can give us a certain idea of the forces have been at work here throughout history. The Icelandic word jökulhlaup which become an international term for glacial run offs originates from catastrophic floods which have occurred here again and again when fire emerges from beneath a glacier. The Mýrdalsjökull icecap is generally 400–700 meters thick, with some spots reaching up to 750 meters.
Katla volcano and the glacier has alway been a tricky photo subject, if not clouds, the size of the volcanic system is so large that it takes days to do it justice and these minutes from one of my trips will be a part of a larger project about Katla when i feel as i have all the footage i need. Until then, i'm recommending this Icelandic documentary, it's not in 4K but full of very useful information and interviews since this volcano has been on high alert for decades like you see trough my numerous updates about Katla.
