It wasn’t for spoofing or cheating, but rather due to a combination of using GPS and WiFi on an airplane flight, which triggered Niantic’s automated detection system. This video dives deep into how this happened, what it means for players, and what you need to know to protect your own account.
While flying across regions at high speeds using in-flight WiFi, Pokémon GO registers your GPS movement in ways that can mimic spoofing behavior. The game may detect sudden changes in location or unrealistic movement patterns, flagging them as possible violations of its Terms of Service. Even though I’ve never used third-party software or modified devices, this caused an unjustified 7-day soft ban on my account.

I also explore the future implications for travelers, especially those who attend global events like GO Fest.
