RoadKill was an iconic American TV and YouTube show that ran for 13 seasons. When the move to Warner Discovery+ happened, RoadKill was..well, killed.

Thoughts on the Chopping Block
What Killed RoadKill.

Hats off to Freiburger and Finnegan and all the crew effected by the stoppage. They produced great TV that helped grow the hobby that we love. Thousands of teens and adults have been exposed to the chaos beauty and mayhem of cars thanks to Road Kill.

The folks Just don’t know:
Check out Freiburgers video, it deals with things about the show, but not the why. He isn’t sure why Road Kill was axed.

Here is a recent quote from David:
On November 18, 2024, MotorTrend announced that that my TV shows would no longer be produced. That means Roadkill (13 seasons) and Roadkill Garage (9 seasons). The spinoffs were also ceased, including Hot Rod Garage, Faster With Newbern & Cotten, and Roadworthy Rescues. There are many episodes of those shows that have been produced but not aired or streamed, and MotorTrend tells me that all those unseen episodes will continue to stream on Max and Discovery+, and will also air in 2025 on MotorTrend cable TV. Some complete episodes can still be seen on the MotorTrend channel of YouTube.

Check out David Freiburger in his own words at the link below, he does a really nice overview of his feelings about his time with Motor Trend TV and how he feels about his crew. It is a nice video.

ROADKILL TV: The Story According to Freiburger

According to reports by Hemmings, Roadkill isn’t the first show that Motor Trend has canceled. Off-road enthusiasts were big sad when Dirt Every Day saw its last episode. Hot Rod Garage and Faster with Newbern and Cotton also came to an end, leaving car lovers with “end of an era” feelings.

General consensus. Like the Tyson Paul fight, we may not ever really know the whys of it all. Like most things, it probably boiled down to money and maybe just not knowing what to do with Motor Trend TV as a whole. While Discovery does have Automotive content, most of it is Reality TV Drag Racing. The corporate shills just didn’t know what to do with a show that was...what ever it was that the minds of David Freiburger and Mike Finnegan came up with.

Or was it woke theology killing off The Motor Trend Machine as well as shows on other platforms like The Grand Tour which saw it’s final season this year?

Who am I kidding it’s all about the money.

Money. That is what drives the bus. And the Warner Bro. Discovery bus has been running on flat tires for a minute. According to Variety, the company has a net loss of $10 BILLION with a B. In a case like that something has to go, and the Motor Trend Production studios and Road Kill etal were on the block. But not just those shows. Let me give you just one example: Warner Brothers and Discovery canceled Batgirl after it was completed, siting that they would make more money taking a tax write off than they would releasing it.

The last bastion is YouTube, a place that can allow you to chart the course you desire. Folks like Freiburger and Finnegan can, like Jeremey Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond Former Top Gear phenoms that worked on and recently stopped filming The Grand Tour) can rise from the ashes of Road Kill. Both Finnegan and Frieburger have a good start on the platform. Finnegan has 949 thousand subscribers and Frieburger sits at 243 thousand and growing. It is an exceptionally solid base to build on. A couple of big name sponsors and they are off and running.
