What's up Geekly Goods fam! 🤔 Is Ernesto de la Cruz actually the real villain of Coco 2, or is something bigger going on? Benjamin Bratt confirmed at D23 that a now-teenage Miguel and Ernesto are going to be forced to team up in this sequel, and that detail alone has me spinning a few theories.
Here's my first idea: there could be a much bigger threat looming over the entire film. Maybe Ernesto genuinely does come back seeking revenge at first, but the two of them end up having to team up to take down some larger villain who poses a real threat to both the Land of the Dead and the world of the living. My second idea leans more emotional. What if the real villain isn't a person at all, but the unresolved truth still sitting between Miguel and Ernesto? That kind of journey could force both characters to finally confront what actually happened between them, and honestly, that would add such a deeper, more meaningful layer to this story.
We do know Ernesto's motivation is genuinely revenge-driven, and that Miguel is going to be pushed to his absolute limits throughout this adventure, so however it plays out, this sequel sounds like it's aiming for something much more complex than a simple good-versus-evil setup.
