The White Pass & Yukon Route is one of the most scenic tourist railroads in the world, and it’s quite easy to see why. The rail line was originally built in the late 1890s to serve the Yukon Gold Rush. Departing from Skagway, Alaska, the line climbs over the Coastal Mountains and then through meadows and along lakes in British Columbia and the Yukon Territory. Here, steam locomotive 73 is seen pulling a train south through British Columbia. 73 was one of the last narrow gauge steam locomotives built in North America, constructed by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1947. It has spent its entire career working for the White Pass and Yukon. After initial retirement and display for several years, it was restored to haul tourist trains in the 1980s.
