I've been thinking a lot lately about all the possible ways we can start new projects—sometimes without realizing they're happening, other times with tremendous care and planning...(and everything in between).

Do you start with a sound? Do you map out a structure? Do you research / scribble / journal / improvise?

My own creative process changes all the time, but lately I've really been enjoying prioritizing starting with joy, play, and space.

Starting from a place of joy = following sounds and ideas that light me up, that are fun, and that I'm simply curious / excited to explore. I often have NO idea where they'll go, but if they make me happy now, chances are they'll continue to do so as they evolve.

Starting from a place of play = taking those initial ideas and playing with them, turning them inside out, using them "incorrectly", mixing & matching & mashing them together just to see what happens (often, a lot of really cool stuff happens).

And starting with a focus on space = slowing down enough to hear all the weird, wonderful little moments in sounds I might otherwise have missed, leaving space for my ideas to form / grow / evolve, committing to ideas I know I love while letting some decisions take time if needed.

Perhaps the biggest thing I’ve realized over the years is that ANY way you can get started is great. Often, even for the most dedicated musicians, getting started can be the hardest part—showing up, and taking that first step. And at the same time, it’s the most important part.

I personally find that coming back to the sounds & ideas that make you happy, remembering to play a little and experiment, and giving yourself space to let things emerge makes it all flow a little easier. ❤️

What helps you get started on new projects?
