One respected viewer just recently posed the following:
"I would have thought a phaser on overload would be too hot to handle - red hot by the time he finds it and takes it to the disposal chute."
This is a GREAT question... for which I have two answers... one simple in the fictional universe and one far more advanced.
This phaser overload takes place in S01E13 The Conscience of the King dated to 8 December 1966. Here, the red color is merely from the Red Alert Light... not an over-HEATING phaser.
An over-LOADING phaser is again tossed by hand like a grenade in S03E17 That Which Survives dated to 24 January 1969.
This and other episodes demonstrate Fictional In Universe consistency, for THE Simple Answer of No, Apparently no heat is generated with the Phaser McGuffin until the explosion.
The advanced esoteric answer to this question, however, is much more disturbing.
In the episode immediately prior to S01E13 The Conscience of the King... we are shown an Overloading Phaser held in hand with no heat.
From previous channel discussion, please remember that whenever you see something that is repetitive or appears ridiculous in a piece of quality literature to include BIBLICAL SCRIPTURE... it is important to look for a possibly coded meaning or purpose.
In this case, the titles for the phaser overload episodes serve as POINTERS back to the key Ancient Anunnaki message first delivered to the public on the 24th November 1966 in Part II of... The Menagerie.
