Sometimes all you need is a giant monster, a handful of unsuspecting victims, and a filmmaker who knows exactly how much fun that concept can be.
In this video, I take a look at Empire of the Ants (1977), the cult eco-horror creature feature directed by legendary giant-monster specialist Bert I. Gordon, making its UK Blu-ray debut through Eureka Classics.
Loosely inspired by the short story from H.G. Wells, Empire of the Ants delivers exactly what its title promises: radioactive giant ants, over-the-top creature attacks, 1970s environmental paranoia and a wonderfully entertaining slice of drive-in cinema. It also features Joan Collins in one of her most memorable pre-Dynasty genre roles.
If you're a fan of giant creature movies, cult horror or Bert I. Gordon's wonderfully imaginative filmography, this is a release well worth checking out.

The story begins when barrels of illegally dumped radioactive waste contaminate a coastal ant colony.
The result?
Ants that grow to enormous proportions—and develop a terrifying intelligence.
