Every slasher eventually wants to explain where its killer came from. The problem is that sometimes the mystery was more interesting than the answer.
In this video, I take a look at Cold Prey 3 (2010), the final film in Norway’s Cold Prey Trilogy, newly released on Blu-ray as part of the Second Sight Films Limited Edition Box Set.
Rather than continuing the story after Cold Prey 2, the third film takes us back in time for a prequel exploring the origins of the Mountain Man. It also abandons much of what visually defined the first two films: there’s less snow, no abandoned hotel as the central location, and much of the action moves into the Norwegian backwoods.
That gives Cold Prey 3 a noticeably different slasher atmosphere, but there’s a trade-off. By revealing more about the killer and his past, the film arguably takes away some of the mystery that made him so effective in the originals.
Does going back to the beginning add something worthwhile to the Cold Prey mythology—or was this one killer who was better left unexplained?

Released in 2010 and directed by Mikkel Brænne Sandemose, Cold Prey 3, originally titled Fritt Vilt III, takes the franchise backwards rather than forwards.
Set before the events of the original Cold Prey, the film explores the dark history surrounding the Mountain Man and the events that eventually transformed him into the killer we encounter in the first two films.
