In this video, I review Cat City (1986), also known as Macskafogó, the Hungarian animated cult classic directed by Béla Ternovszky, released on Blu-ray by Deaf Crocodile Films.
Set in the wonderfully ridiculous year 80 AMM – After Mickey Mouse, the film follows mouse secret agent Nick Grabovsky, who's sent on a mission to recover the plans for a machine that could finally turn the tide against the criminal cats threatening mouse civilisation.
It's inventive, funny, packed with movie references and completely unpredictable—exactly the sort of animated discovery that Deaf Crocodile does so well.

Cat City follows retired mouse super-agent Grabovsky as he's pulled back into action to retrieve the plans for a weapon capable of defeating a powerful cat syndicate. What follows is an energetic parody of James Bond and other genre cinema, filled with gangsters, gadgets, musical numbers, sci-fi absurdity and even a group of vampire bats. Beneath all the silliness is some wonderfully imaginative animation and a film that clearly understands and loves the movies it's making fun of. It's easy to see why it became such an enduring Hungarian cult favourite.
