In this video, I review Escape to Athena (1979), the star-studded World War II adventure directed by George P. Cosmatos, newly released as a Limited Edition Blu-ray from Imprint Films.
Set on a Nazi-occupied Greek island, the film throws together POW adventure, resistance fighters, comedy, stolen antiquities and action in an attempt to create an old-fashioned wartime crowd-pleaser. There's certainly plenty going on—and an incredible cast to carry it—but for me, all those ingredients never quite come together into the entertaining adventure they should.

During World War II, Allied prisoners on a Greek island are forced by their Nazi captors to excavate valuable antiquities while a local resistance movement plots to overthrow the occupation. Escape to Athena boasts an extraordinary ensemble including Roger Moore, Telly Savalas, David Niven, Elliott Gould, Stefanie Powers, Claudia Cardinale, Richard Roundtree and Sonny Bono. Unfortunately, despite the cast, beautiful Greek locations and bursts of action, I found it surprisingly dull—the mixture of war movie, comedy and adventure never generates the excitement you expect from those ingredients.
