In this video, I take a look at The Dancing Hawk (1977), the visually striking and deeply unusual Polish film directed by Grzegorz Królikiewicz, now released on Blu-ray by Radiance Films. Based on the novel by Tadeusz Nowak, The Dancing Hawk follows a peasant boy trying to reinvent himself and climb the social ladder, but the deeper he moves into a changing political system, the more disconnected and fractured his identity becomes. The storytelling is fragmented and often surreal, with imagery and editing choices that can feel intentionally disorientating.
This isn’t a straightforward narrative film. It’s abstract, symbolic, and at times emotionally cold, but it’s also visually fascinating. Królikiewicz directs with an aggressive style that constantly pushes the viewer off balance, using distorted framing, unusual sound design, and abrupt editing to create a sense of paranoia and instability.
