Tea strainers, honey and water may sound like a lip-smacking combo to humans, but add peanut butter, oats, and sardines? Now that's a wild animal's cup-of-tea!
AWC ecologists find this flavour infusion extremely effective in attracting a range of animals, spraying honey water on trees and storing the rest of the ingredients all mixed up in tea strainers for maximal olfactory impact.
The strainers serve as a perforated holder, so that animals can smell the bait but can't run off with it.
That way, when they set up a camera trap in front of bait, they are guaranteed to sight a variety of animals, instead of just the first one to find the food.
