Bilbies till soil as they dig for food and shelter, turning over about 20 tonnes a year. The conical pits they create while feeding have been shown to collect leaf litter, seeds and extra water as runoff, offering an ideal, nutrient-rich environment for germination. 🌧🍂🌱
The loss of these gold-star gardeners from more than 80% of their former range has been rough on our arid and semi-arid ecosystems.
Feral cat and fox predation plus competition from rabbits has led to regional extinctions, and a resultant reduction in soil fertility in their former homes.
Our reintroduction of flourishing bilby populations to 5 feral-free areas has helped reverse some of the limiting habitat conditions like soil compaction, lack of nutrients and harsh microclimates.
These changes have numerous benefits for habitat regeneration, increasing the abundance and diversity of plants that subsequently grow in bilby diggings! 🌱
