In our premiere episode of What’s New? We talk to Alysia Abbott (MFA Creative Writing ‘03), about her award-winning book Fairyland, A Memoir of My Father and the film adaptation, produced by Sofia Coppola, that debuted at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival. The film will be premiering in New York City on October 2, 2025 with a limited theatrical release on October 10, 2025.
Using a remarkable collection of her father’s writings, the memoir explores Alysia’s experience growing up in 1970’s San Francisco with a gay, single father. The memoir was a New York Times Book Review Editors’ Choice, winner of the ALA Stonewall Award and Madame Figaro Prix Heroine, and a finalist for the Lambda Literary Awards.
