Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, B, A, Start.

If you grew up with a classic controller in your hands, those directional inputs and button presses are practically etched into your DNA. It is, without a doubt, the most famous cheat code in all of video game history: The legendary Konami Code. Today, we are taking a trip back in time to explore the origins of this iconic string of commands, what it actually does, and my very first experience using it to save my ship.

Before we dive into the gameplay, let's talk about what the Konami Code actually is and where it came from. Created by the late Kazuhisa Hashimoto in 1986, this sequence was never originally intended to be a global phenomenon. While developing the home console port of the arcade smash hit Gradius for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), Hashimoto found the game entirely too difficult to playtest properly. To make his job easier, he programmed a hidden sequence that would grant the player a full suite of power-ups from the very beginning. He intended to remove the code before the game shipped to the public, but thankfully for us, he forgot! The code remained in the final retail version, players discovered it, and a massive piece of gaming history was born. While most people instantly associate the Konami Code with Contra and those sweet, sweet 30 extra lives, Gradius was actually the title that started it all.

Over the decades, this legendary input sequence has transcended the medium of video games entirely. It has become a pop culture touchstone, appearing in movies, television shows, and even hidden as easter eggs on popular websites. But for those of us who grew up blowing into cartridges and mapping out enemy attack patterns on CRT televisions, it will always be the ultimate lifeline. It was the secret knowledge passed down on the playground, long before the days of internet walkthroughs and digital strategy guides.

That brings me to my first time using the code. Do you remember what the first game was that you used it with? For me, it was absolutely Gradius. It remains one of my favorite games of all time. It’s an absolute masterpiece of the side-scrolling shoot-'em-up (or shmup) genre and easily one of Konami's absolute best early releases. In this video, I’m firing it up to show you exactly how it works. As you can see from my early gameplay, I am clearly not doing very well right out of the gate. The game is notoriously unforgiving. So, it's time to pause the game and input the magic sequence. Unpausing the game reveals the magic. Suddenly, your Vic Viper ship is instantly equipped with almost all the different upgrades you can get in the game! It equips you with Multiples (options) and missiles, turning you into a formidable force. However, it doesn't give you absolutely everything. You still need to manually collect power-ups for certain abilities, like the Speed Up, and it also leaves out the Laser. Not blazer, not glazer, but the almighty Laser! Even with the code, the game still gives you a reason to hunt down those power-up capsules to fully max out your ship.

But here is the major catch with the Konami Code in Gradius, and it’s something I demonstrate the hard way in this video. After getting fully powered up, I intentionally let myself get hit. Once you lose your ship, you respawn back with the basic peashooter, completely stripped of your hard-earned arsenal. You might think, "No problem, I'll just pause and enter the code again." Nope! I pause, hit Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, B, A... and absolutely nothing happens. In Gradius, you can only use the Konami Code exactly once per game. It’s a brilliant little limitation that gives you a massive head start but still demands that you master the game's mechanics if you actually want to see the end credits.

As a huge advocate for physical media and original hardware, I had a funny realization while putting this video together. Despite Gradius being one of my absolute favorite retro experiences, I don't actually own a physical copy of it for the NES! I do have a copy of Salamander (the spin-off/sequel) for the Famicom, which is a fantastic piece in my collection, but the original NES Gradius cartridge is somehow missing from my shelf. It looks like I have a new target for my next retro game hunt! There is just nothing quite like popping a real cartridge into a real console.

Now, I want to hear from all of you! Turn back the clock and head down to the comments section to let me know:

Do you remember the very first game where you used the Konami Code?

What system were you playing on?

What specific game was it, and what exactly did the code unlock for you?
