I recently had to make what I thought was going to be a standard, run-of-the-mill Target run, but if you know me, you know I can never resist taking a quick stroll down the toy and gaming aisles. You can imagine my absolute surprise when I turned the corner and saw that Target had completely stocked up on brand-new, exclusive merchandise for the upcoming Super Mario Galaxy Movie! As a lifelong Nintendo fanboy who has spent countless hours exploring the cosmos in the original games, and who now loves sharing that magic by playing Mario Kart and Switch Sports with my daughters, seeing all this stuff in person was an absolute treat.
Right off the bat, it was super cool to see how they are blending the recent Super Mario Bros. Wonder merchandise right alongside the brand-new Galaxy Movie gear. Nintendo is clearly going all out to mark the monumental 40th anniversary of the franchise, and the sheer volume of collectibles on the shelves reflects that perfectly. My eyes immediately went to the brand-new plush Luma stars. Designed like adorable little bean bags, they are incredibly cute. I know my youngest daughter would absolutely love to have a few of these scattered around her room! Right next to them, they had awesome collectible popcorn tins featuring Bowser Jr. The design is fantastic, prominently featuring the official movie logo. At just $10, it felt like an absolute no-brainer, so we definitely picked one up for the game room shelf.
Moving further down the display, Target had a ton of smaller accessories. There was a huge assortment of highly detailed buttons, enamel pins, and old-school slap bracelets. They even had a classic Magic 8-Ball that was brilliantly redesigned as a Super Mario Question Block. They also had a really neat candy display. The mints come in collectible cases—including a Super Mario Boo and a Question Block that actually feature built-in LEDs so they light up!
Not everything was a budget-friendly impulse buy, though. I found an incredibly detailed Super Mario warp pipe keychain and heavy-duty backpack clip. I absolutely loved the design, but checking the price tag gave me a bit of sticker shock. Priced at nearly $40, the craftsmanship is genuinely great, but that’s just a bit too expensive for my blood, even as a dedicated collector.
The highlight of the entire display had to be the massive selection of action figures and playsets. They had familiar faces, including Princess Peach looking as cute as ever and a classic Toad. But the real stars of the show were the new movie characters. They had Rosalina in figure form, perfectly matching her appearance on the theatrical poster, and a brand-new Bowser Jr. figure with phenomenal detail poured into the texturing. The playsets completely blew me away. They had a Bowser’s Castle diorama that included so many perfect details, right down to Bowser's iconic piano! The absolute coolest piece on the shelf, however, was the Gateway Galaxy playset featuring Captain Toad from Treasure Tracker.
We're so glad we stopped off at Target as We Found So Many Cool Super Mario Galaxy Movie Exclusive Toys. There are so many highly detailed items hitting shelves right now.
