Rosh means “head” and also connects to crowning, like the head of a baby during birth. In Aramaic, rosha means the edge of a blade, the tip of a finger, or a fingernail, just like the crescent moon seen in the western sky at sunset.
Chodesh comes from chadash meaning to renew, rebuild, refurbish, and even to polish a sickle. The crescent moon itself looks like a heavenly sickle, reminding us of the harvest, which all the feasts of YHWH are tied to.
When the first visible sliver appears, that begins Rosh Chodesh, the new moon day, from evening to evening.
All of this is rooted in the heavens and signs Yahuwah gave us (Gen. 1:14) to declare His appointed times. Nothing is random, it’s all prophetic, visual, and connected to the cycle of renewal and harvest.
