In countries like Austria, Hungary, and Italy, he was originally called Sinter Klaus, riding a magical flying horse or goat, accompanied by terrifying helpers known as Krampus, half-goat demons who would punish children for misbehavior.
In the 1500s, Sinter Klaus traveled house to house giving gifts to the good, while Krampus or his blackjacks would punish the bad. Over time, Sinter Klaus was “Christianized” into Saint Nicolas, supposedly based on the saint of Myra from Turkey.
