Halloween wasn’t always candy and costumes, it began as the ancient festival of Samhain, a night when the veil between the living and the dead was believed to be thinnest. Druids demanded blood sacrifices to appease Mother Earth, using goat entrails and human offerings for divination and protection. They wore masks, paraded as spirits, and terrorized local villages, marking homes with blood hexagrams if they refused their demands of virgin sacrifice. They would leave a squash with a demonic face by the house with a candle inside.
The Romans later blended their festival of Pomona (apple bobbing) with Samhain, creating some of the traditions that survive today, though the dark origins have been largely forgotten. Samhain was a night of communion with spirits, where masks and offerings were believed necessary to survive the hostility of the dead. Even today, remnants of Samhain practices can still be found in parts of Ireland.
