This short reveals modern pagans, Wiccans and witches performing actual Yule rituals and prayers—calling on the old gods, thanking them for the season of darkness and celebrating the rebirth to come. Before their rites begin, they openly tell their Christian friends, “remember, you got this from us,” as they explain how today’s Christmas traditions come straight from their ancient worship.

They describe Santa, the Holly King and Oak King, the evergreen brought indoors to honor the life of the old gods, and even how Christmas traditions made it easy for one practitioner to transition into Wicca because the symbols were the same. Then the rituals start: invoking the gods, offering a communal drink to the lord and lady, and ending with the familiar line “troll the ancient yuletide carol.”
