What is Emotional and Mental Connection
Emotional connection is tied to a feeling of closeness with another person that leads to a tendency to self-reveal to the other person. In simple terms, you can establish and build upon emotional connection with your partner by showing that you’re honest, open and that you care about what matters to your partner.
This is different to physical closeness which is associated with affection in general, contact and physical closeness (Gonzales et al 2020)
4 Ways to Improve Emotional and Mental Connection
1. Show an interest in your partner’s life for example asking and then listening to their responses about work, family or personal interests.
2. Show you understand your partner’s personal concerns and situations. For example if your partner is having work or family issues you might ask about these issues, state how you can see this would be an issue of concern and perhaps work through problem solving this issue together with your partner as a way of showing support.
3. Being empathetic about your partner’s feelings by listening carefully to what your partner says without judging or offering a solution and focusing on understanding why your partner feels the way they do about an issue.
4. Being honest, open and trustworthy about what you say and do including sharing your own personal thoughts and concerns with your partner.
