The Super Sukhoi (also referred to as Super-30 or Super Sukhoi 30 MKI) is an ambitious mid-life upgrade program for the Indian Air Force's (IAF) fleet of Sukhoi Su-30MKI multirole fighters. The Su-30MKI, a highly customized variant of the Russian Su-30 developed specifically for India (with features like thrust-vectoring engines and integration of Indian, Israeli, and French systems), forms the backbone of the IAF with around 260-272 aircraft in service.The "Super Sukhoi" initiative aims to modernize these jets to extend their operational life by 15-20 years (potentially until around 2055), boost their combat capabilities to a 4.7-generation standard, and incorporate a high degree of indigenous technology under India's "Atmanirbhar Bharat" (self-reliant India) push.Key Aspects of the Super Sukhoi UpgradeScope: Initial phase targets 84 aircraft for upgrades. Plans aim to cover nearly 75% of the fleet (around 200 aircraft) in phased batches. There are discussions of a parallel Russian-assisted upgrade path for the remaining ~175 jets to speed up the process and avoid long delays. Major Upgrades (primarily indigenous, led by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and DRDO):Virupaksha AESA radar — An advanced Indian-developed Gallium Nitride (GaN)-based Active Electronically Scanned Array radar with over 2,400 Transmit/Receive Modules (TRMs) for superior detection, tracking, and jamming resistance. Upgraded avionics suite, including digital cockpits, wide-area displays (WAD), and AI-infused systems to reduce pilot workload through automation. Enhanced electronic warfare (EW) capabilities, IR sensors, and other subsystems.
