This video is an in depth chapter by chapter summary of the communist manifesto. I explain the historical context as well as the marist concepts that are referenced throughout the text.

Intro
What’s the communist manifesto about? Communism obviously, right? Shockingly not really no, mostly socialism and marxism. In this video I will give you a chapter-by-chapter summary of what it is about, and when applicable I will explain the Marxist concept that is referenced. Which brings me to my first point. The manifesto is not an in-depth explanation of Marxism. It’s a pamphlet designed to rally the working people.
Because of that it says things like “The history of all hitherto existing societies is the history of class struggle” without explaining what that means and why they use that exact framework. To understand that you need to read the rest of Marx’s work. Otherwise, you look like a buffoon at the first political discussion you take part in. Cough, Cough
The manifesto was written by the communist league, essentially communist representatives from multiple countries in London in early 1848. This means this manifesto was written before Marx even released capital. At this point he spread his ideas via newspapers directed at workers so most concepts were known to the public but they weren’t yet as developed as they would later be.
Also, since this manifesto is based on Marx’s early work it differs to the ideas of the late Marx who among other things was influenced by the experience of the Paris commune. This manifesto was written before all of that.
The original part is only around 30 pages and you can read it in roughly an hour and a half, at least that’s how long the librvox audio version is. Since then they added 14 pages of forewords which I will skip because who cares about the polish edition from 1892, I am not reading that edition so I don’t need the foreword.
They also added a whole lot of letters to the end. This is pretty much them answering questions they received after popularising the manifesto to clarify and update some points. It’s mostly questions like, are you a communist, what do communists want and so on. Very basic things which I don’t need to repeat since the manifesto and this video already cover the answers.
It was written right in the middle of the industrial revolution which moved millions of feudal farmers into industrialized cities in which they worked in horrendous conditions for only enough pay to survive to the next pay day. Naturally there was lots of unrest among this new poor class. And it’s in this atmosphere that the manifesto is written.

A spectre is haunting Europe, the spectre of communism. The manifesto starts of by declaring that everyone keeps calling each other communist without even knowing what that means. From liberals to conservatives everyone is called communist by the opposition. Because of this the communist league meeting in London would now for once and for all publish their manifesto and say that they are communists, what their goals and opinions are, what their goals and opinions are not, as well as who is counterrevolutionary.
