Hello everybody. You read the title, this is another alternative history video and it’s about what would have happened if the soviet revolution of 1917 had spread. Most historians agree that Lenin’s revolution in the Russian empire likely influenced the rest of the century.
It completely changed the lives of anyone in eastern euope, it scared the people of germany and Italy into supporting fascist parties to protect themselves against what they saw as a Marxist plot to destroy them, somehow which lead to world war twp and of course the entire rest of the 20th century was just the cold war and the USSR was an important part of that.
The first world war really was the seminal catastrophe of the 20th century. So what would happen if you changed a major part of the world war? What if the Russian revolution went differently? What if it spread and more countries became socialist like the USSR? That is what this video is about.

The obvious question to ask about the scenario is: Why? Why would the revolution spread at all? And what do I mean by that? Well, this goes all the way back to Karl Marx. You see, marx thought that the more developed and industrialised a society is the more the workers will realize they are taken advantage of and eventually they will organise and overthrow the capitalist state to establish socialism.
Using this logic the first country to have a revolution would be the one with the largest factory worker population because the more workers there are the more they can unionise and rebel. And of course after the revolution takes place the other workers of the nearby countries would realise that they are oppressed and that a better worker run society is possible and they would overthrow their state until all workers of all places are free.
The reason Karl Marx believed in this form of revolution was because during his time there were many popular uprisings against the ruling classes. Most famously of course the French revolution which started in France and inspired other revolutions all across Europe. It’s the same story for the revolutions of 1848 which spread from one country to the next.
So, to Karl marx and all of his contemporaries that seemed like the obvious path towards revolution. A worker’s uprising creating a better state and becoming a role model for all other workers who then overthrow their own capitalists. Of course, they were also worried about things that may split the working class like racism.
Matter of fact some people around Karl Marx’s life time believed that there could be a revolution in an industrialised country but that the non-socialist countries would gang up on it and destroy the worker’s revolution. This was not very far fetched. After all after the French revolution removed all the nobles from power all countries in Europe started a coalition war to destroy the evolution.
