Hello everybody. We all know who the Nazis were and what they did. They are famous for the number of crimes they committed. From illegal wars and occupation all the way to the literal holocaust. Naturally these crimes which killed millions are the first thing we think about.
But before all that they had already committed crimes to reach their goal. One of these crimes was the suppression of freedom of speech thought and action. By 1933 they decided it’s not enough to suppress the opposition but to eradicate it.
So they started burning. They burnt everything they disliked. 25000 books were destroyed by them all over the country. The nazi youth would break into museums, universities, schools and even private collections and destroy anything they deemed to be anti german.
What was and what was not anti german was of course not easy to pin point so usually the decision of whether a written work should be destroyed was up to the Nazi who was holding it. Because of this many works survived the burnings with only a couple of editions left.
But there are works which were completely destroyed, for example you can’t find an original German language version of the communist manifesto from before 1933. But we already knew that, the Nazis burned opposition works, but what books specifically? For what reason? And what was it about?
Well there are multiple categories of banned works. There is communist literature, anti german stuff which really just means everything, then antifascist works can’t have those of course and then there are so called degenerate works which were also destroyed.

Fascism in the form we saw it in nazi germany was inherently anti communist and anti socialist. The leftist explanation is that capitalism, when threatened by workers, like in the soviet union, will turn fascist. This is because the people who are already rich industrialists support an anti socialist parties like the NSDAP. Everyone knows that Porsche and VW worked with the nazi government, and they made sure their interests were represented.
So literally anything any socialist ever wrote was burned in nazi germany. For example everything Karl Marx created was burned. From the communist manifesto all the way to das Kapital. There are some numbnuts out there who say that the nazis were socialist because their party name says socialist.
Ignoring the 999 other counter arguments why would the nazis burn socialist literature if they were socialist? That makes no sense at all, which is of course because it’s a myth that the nazis were socialists. As a matter of fact many german leftists were imprisoned in concentration camps. There were so many leftists who were interred as part of the holocaust that they got their own badge to identify them as socialists. It’s this red upside-down triangle.
Of course, the nazis did not only hate Karl Marx and what he had to say. They also hated everyone who even hinted towards liking the works of Karl Marx. As such all works by Lenin and Stalin were also burned. Yes even the collection of josep stalin’s poetry for some reason.
Now this section is called communists but it was not only communists who were interred and had their lives works destroyed as part of the holocaust. Social democrats and even some honest to god liberals received the same treatment. For example Konrad Adenauer, the first west german chancellor along with east german leader Honecker were victims of the nazis.
This really goes to show that nobody, even free speech fans and capitalists are safe from fascism. If they come back, you and I are dead. I am dead for making communist videos and you are dead for having a communist video in your browser history.
