Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann is a classic 2007 mecha anime (now 15 years old in 2022!), known for some top 5 action and ridiculous moments. But, underneath the giant mecha fights, the anime says a lot about leadership. First, there’s Kamina and the idea of legends. Then, we witness the burst of the legend bubble, and how they can be dangerous with Simon and Yoko. But in its last arc, Gurren Lagann tackles something more broad after that one example; what even is a leader? What is their purpose, their point to exist with followers as they do? Are they friends? Family? Something else? Building off of the lessons from Kamina, Simon, and Yoko, we have to talk about both the Anti-Spiral and Rossiu; one new enemy, and one old friend, and how they perfectly summon the stage for Simon to bubble up once again, remember his bro, and show us all what leaders really are, and when they should be. From this super combination of old favorite characters, and new contenders like Rossiu or Kittan, TTGL caps itself off in grand fashion; a ridiculous final battle mecha fight, as well as summoning a deeply meaningful final message.
