Israel said on Thursday (Oct 17) that it has killed Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar, who masterminded the Oct 7, 2023 attack that triggered the ongoing war in Gaza. Israel stopped short of declaring a victory against the Palestinian militant group, while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netayahu said fighting will continue until the remaining Israeli hostages in Gaza are brought home. Jonathan Panikoff, who is director of think tank Atlantic Council's Scowcroft Middle East Security Initiative, says it is a “significant moment” but gave some reasons for caution. These include the possibility of Hamas splintering, he tells CNA’s Asia First.
