Jane Goodall is one of the most influential scientists of our modern times. But what did she actually find out? What are Jane Goodalls great discoveries in science?
We should start by taking about Jane Goodalls early life and how she became a scientist. Valerie Jane Morris-Goodall was born in the United Kingdom in 1934. Although Jane Goodall could not afford university, she was fascinated by Africa and in becoming a scientist and so she booked a flight to Kenya. In Kenya, Jane Goodall met Louis Leakey, a famous anthropologist. She became his assistant and so Jane Goodall's scientific discoveries at Gombe Stream Chimpanzee Reserve (Tanzania) began. After months of observation, the first chimpanzee, called David Greybeard, gained trust in Jane Goodall. Then, more and more chimps came very close to her. Jane Goodall observed that chimpanzees have certain personality traits. She wrote them down and drew attention of a global audience with her depictions. In 2017, a study aimed to quantify personality traits in chimps partially based on Goodalls description. And it was found that, indeed, chimpanzees seem to have certain character traits. Jane Goodall also observed that chimpanzees make tools. The ability to make tools enables chimpanzees to collect food such as termites. We now know that toolmaking in chimpanzees is part of their culture. Animal culture means that members of a community learn and group typical behaviours from each other. In chimpanzees, cultural traits seem to be adaptive in some cases if the food reward is high enough. The number of females in a group of chimpanzees also seems to be important for developing a sophisticated chimpanzee culture. Jane Goodall also discovered that chimpanzees pursue their prey together (cooperative hunting) and that chimpanzees fight wars. In the latter, chimpanzees mostly attack single individuals of the other group. Moreover, Jane Goodall saw that chimpanzees adopt non-related orphans. Adoption (or allomothering) has been observed over and over again in chimpanzees. Besides her scientific discoveries, Jane Goodall also contributed to the world of science in other ways. In 1977, Goodall founded the Jane Goodall Institute for Wildlife Research, Education and Conservation. While the Institute initially focused on investigated wild chimpanzees, its work has expanded to protect the environment for all living things. For her work, Jane Goodall received numerous awards such as the Kyoto prize or the National Geographic Society’s Hubbard Medal.

Today we will talk about 3 common human parasites: these human parasites are Toxoplasma gondii, Giardia & Hookworms. These human parasites have infected numerous people worldwide and therefore many scientists aim to find out how we can prevent infections with these human parasites. By the end of this video, I hope that you remember the three human parasites we will discuss and how they are transmitted.

Lets go trough the human parasites one by one. Toxoplasma gondii is a human parasite which has infected over 2 billion people worldwide. This means that this human parasite can be found on average in each family. The human parasite Toxoplasma gondii is mostly transmitted through cat feces. Once inactive toxoplasma gondii egg-like structures have entered the body, they undergo a transformation a produce many toxoplasma offsprings. After the immune system has recognised toxoplasma gondii, the parasite starts to hide in muscles, eyes and the brain. Toxoplasma gondii can stay in the brain for years. Normally, toxoplasma infections are not detrimental . HIV and cancer patients and unborn babies can develop toxoplasmosis however which is a serious human parasite infection. This is especially dramatic if a pregnant woman becomes infected with toxoplasma gondii. The resulting toxoplasmosis might result in stillbirth or lead to developmental issues. Therefore, Toxoplasma gondii can be a detrimental human parasite and is one of the most common human parasites.
In contrast to toxoplasma gondii, the human parasite giardia lamblia can be found in food and water. Over 220 million people are infected with giardia. Giardia can cause giardiasis which is characterised by abdominal pain and flatulence. Pregnant women and children are at highest risk to develop giardiasis.We can use metronidazole to treat giardiasis.
Hookworms are human parasites currently live inside almost 500 million people. These human parasites are normally contracted by human feces. Hookworms can survive in soil for a long time and infect people who pass by. People who are infected with hookworms see rashes and then experience abdominal pain and diarrhea. Currently, hookworms are studies as they might help to treat autoinflammatory diseases.
