This lecture explores the architectural and spatial dimensions of Olga de Amaral’s textiles within the broader field of postwar fiber art. From the 1960s onward, artists such as Amaral, Jagoda Buić, Sheila Hicks, Ritzi Jacobi, and Ana Lupas initiated a radical transformation of weaving, expanding it from a traditionally decorative, two-dimensional medium into immersive, sculptural forms that redefined the relationship between body, material, and space. Amaral’s early training in architecture shaped her approach to textile not as a passive medium, but as a means of constructing walls, portals, and veils––structures in which weight, light, and tactility are central forces.
Marie Perennès is an art historian and curator specializing in Latin American art, with a particular emphasis on women artists and the representation of social and political struggles. Her exhibitions and projects explore the Western reception of non-Western practices, as well as the relationships between art, craft, and Indigenous traditions, challenging the boundaries within global art histories. She served as curator at the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain in Paris from 2017 to 2024, where she organized “Southern Geometries, from Mexico to Tierra del Fuego” (2018), “Nous les Arbres” (2019), “Graciela Iturbide” (2022), and “Olga de Amaral” (2024). She also co-curated ICA Miami’s “Olga de Amaral” exhibition and regularly collaborates with institutions and collectors across Latin America, including MALBA, Buenos Aires, and Banco de la República, Bogotá.
