For today's dispatch, we welcome Dr. Andrea Queeley, associate professor of Anthropology and Africa, and African American studies at Florida International University. Her research looks at the intricate ways in which diasporic subjectivities deal with globalized structural inequalities. Dr. Queeley's lecture focuses on the work of Afro-Cuban filmmaker Gloria Rolando. Using her work as a starting point, Dr. Queeley traces a long history of fraught race relations in Cuba and the innovative modes of expressions that have flourished nonetheless. The lecture was originally delivered on October 5, 2019, as the culmination of week-long seminars with local students.
