Weathering rail on a garden railroad with spray paint after it is assembled on ties and laid in place using spray paint and rust colors. Then onto ballasting using poultry grit and Kitty Litter.
We use Llagas Creek #1 gauge code 250 track with nickel silver track. As the nickel silver never rusts, we add rust by painting the rails with several rust colors of metal-compatible outdoor paint. This requires masking the ties and benchwork.
Then onto ballasting for the perfect look using poultry grit, a ground granite product usually fed to chickens and turkeys to improve digestion! We also use simple clay-only kitty litter from Walmart.
