In this incredible collaboration, we show something few thought possible until recently: using Home Assistant in one part of the world to control Zigbee smart devices on the other side of the planet — reliably, securely, and with almost no lag. The magic comes from the SMLight SLZB-06, a powerful Zigbee coordinator with built-in WireGuard VPN, making it easy to manage smart home devices remotely without cloud dependencies or complicated network setups.
The SLZB-06 isn't just another Zigbee stick — it's an advanced Zigbee coordinator that works over Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or USB, and more importantly, includes a built-in VPN server. With this feature, we were able to create a secure tunnel between our Home Assistant instance in the northern hemisphere and Zigbee devices physically located in Australia. What used to require complex setups with port forwarding or cloud relays is now possible with a single device from SMLight.
Whether you're using Zigbee2MQTT or ZHA, this setup works perfectly.
