This Synology SRM Port Forwarding video will help you to understand what port forwarding means, what is does, how to do it the simple way and then how to do it the professional way.
So, lets start at the very beginning. Port forwarding is Synology SRM and on any other firewall out there, allows you to "bind" a port, usually a TCP port, and forward any requests made from the internet to that port to a specific internal host. In Synology SRM Port Forwarding this is done the the network app.
An example to port forwarding is for example to to create an entry to forward all requests from the internet on RDP port 3389 to be forwarded to an internal host that has remote desktop enabled. This is very risky and we strongly advise AGAISNT doing it. This is just an example of port forwarding.
By default, in Synology SRM Port Forwarding, SRM will create a firewall rule whenever you create a port forwarding rule. Actually, the firewall rule SRM creates is crucial in order to actually allow port forwarded traffic to pass through the firewall. Otherwise all traffic will be blocked by the firewall the whole port forwarding chain will break.
For the more advanced users, there is an option in Synology SRM Port Forwarding mechanism to disable the auto creation of firewall rules for port forwarding rules. this will mean we will have to manually create a firewall rule to all the port forwarded traffic through, but since we have to manually create the firewall rule, we now have a lot more control and we do not have to allow ALL traffic to go through. we can narrow down who is allowed to use the port forward rule, who can pass and who is blocked.
The manual creation of firewall rules for Synology SRM Port Forwarding is really where Synology SRM shines. This is exactly where you can take a fairly insecure network feature like port forwarding and make it, in sme cases, almost zero risk. if you, for example, will be connecting to your network from work and you have a static ip at your work place, you can create a firewall rule to only allow this specific ip address. all other addresses will be blocked.
