How many of you out there consider yourselves to be true video game completionists? Let’s be real—I am generally not that guy. Most of the time, I really don't care about going through the absolute grind of 100%ing a game. I’m usually perfectly content to just play through, enjoy the story, experience the mechanics, and move on to the next title. But lately, there has been one massive, glaring exception for me: Gran Turismo 7 on the PlayStation 5.
I have been absolutely hyper-focused on trying to 100% the main campaign of this game. And guess what? I finally did it! But let me tell you, it was no thanks to the absolute nightmare of a track that was standing in my way.
If you play GT7, you might already know the pain I'm talking about. It was the Tokyo Expressway - East Clockwise track for the Gran Turismo World Touring Car 600 (WTC 600). This was the very last event I had to beat to hit my goal, and I tried it, and tried it, and tried it again. There are a couple of incredibly frustrating things about this specific race that make it a total wall for so many players.
First and foremost: this is one of the hardest races in GT7, due to the track conditions. It starts off damp. You might think, "Okay, throw on some Intermediate tires," but because it's a drying track, those Intermediates get chewed up and destroyed incredibly quickly. On top of the brutal tire wear, you are strictly horsepower limited. It is a 600 Performance Points (PP) race, which means you can't just brute-force your way to victory by picking a hypercar and blasting past the AI on the straightaways. You are heavily restricted in your car choices. To squeeze every ounce of horsepower out of your build while staying under the 600 PP cap, you are forced to equip some of the absolute worst tires available. And because you're on terrible tires on a damp track, you are constantly slipping, sliding, and fighting for even a fraction of traction.
But I finally cracked the code. After endless trial and error, I found out that if you take one of the Lamborghinis and actually downgrade your grip by using a mix of Comfort Soft and Comfort Medium tires, you can drop your rating right down to exactly 599 Performance Points. This allowed me to keep enough power to compete. From there, it became a game of pure driving strategy. I managed my fuel consumption meticulously using the fuel map so I didn't have to take on a full fuel load during a pit stop. And because I was nursing those harder comfort tires, they barely wore down, meaning I didn't have to waste precious time pitting for fresh rubber either.
By executing this no-pit strategy, I was eventually able to cross the finish line and take the win on this brutal track. That victory was the very last hurdle I had to clear, and with it, I have officially 100%ed the main portion of Gran Turismo 7! There is still all the new additional update content and extra events you can jump into to push that completion even further, but hitting that main milestone feels incredible.
This is honestly such an amazing game, and achieving this has only made me love it more. I seriously cannot wait to see what Polyphony Digital does next with Gran Turismo 8.
As many of you know, racing is practically in my blood. Whether I'm scaling things down at the RC track, testing out new sim racing wheels, or watching the pros, I've been a massive racing fan my entire life. From going to Slinger Speedway and the Milwaukee Mile as a kid to following my favorite NASCAR drivers today, getting past a frustrating, hyper-realistic challenge like Tokyo Expressway feels like a real victory. I am so incredibly glad to finally have this pain-in-the-rear-end track in my rearview mirror.
