Hidden deep in the woods, the McRae Cemetery in Sumter County, Georgia, has been completely taken over by nature. Thorny vines wrapped around everything, fallen trees blocked the way, and thick undergrowth made it nearly impossible to move. At times, we had to crawl just to see the headstones hidden beneath the overgrowth.

Cecil and I worked our way through the dense brush, uncovering lost graves that hadn’t been seen in years. Some headstones were just feet away, yet completely invisible in the jungle of thorns and tangled vines. It looks like a storm took down a lot of trees, leaving the cemetery in an almost impassable state.

This place has been forgotten, but we’re here to document it before nature erases it completely.
