The Malay proverb warning against living by the sea has turned painfully real for Nur Zakiah Hamdan, whose family home in Kampung Jawa was destroyed by coastal erosion last year.
Built in 2009 with sponsorship from a financial institution, the three‑room house collapsed when giant waves struck during the monsoon on January 12.
Her father, Hamdan Mohid, 61, still weeps when visiting the damaged home, once filled with family memories.
The shoreline, once 500 metres away, had crept to within 20 metres, swallowing casuarina trees and the road before waves tore down the house. Losses exceeded RM20,000, with only documents salvaged.
Villagers say erosion now threatens homes year‑round, with waves pounding settlements even during high tide. Preventive barriers came too late, leaving families displaced and fearful of the next monsoon.
