The Old State Road near Columbia along the Congaree River is notorious for its history. The Native Americans lived here and traded at Fort Congaree. The British used the road and were defeated during the Revolutionary War at Granby which for a short was home to the first settlers in the area. Alligators even live here ! It contained a last stand for Confederate soldiers who manned earthworks in attempt to slow the approach of General W. T. Sherman in 1865. Well, some say they can still hear the battle cry and sounds of the combat...
