As long as we’ve been enjoying whisky, we’ve heard about how things are not what they once were. It’s often true. Mostly though, the context is when things get worse. But what about when it gets demonstrably better?
There are things that can happen in whisky where profit and success are not pursued through routes of efficiency and cost saving, but through making the product as good as it can be. It’s a delicate balance; we all need to be able to afford it after all, but some do manage to pull off this magic trick.
Since the vPub should always try to favour positivity where possible, this is what we’ll focus on. To dedicate a vPub to the opposite would certainly be a lot easier, but it would be pretty depressing too, don’t you think? I’m not sure it would achieve anything either.
But to dedicate a session to things that are much better than they once were, well, that seems like not only something that could be fun and positive for everyone, but something that we could repeat for future visits.
However, just so you don’t think we’ve gone all soft and wishy-washy, we’ll also call out those that have indeed lost their way to meaningless mediocrity. Legends of the past that have somehow become the easiest thing to ignore. You know who they are, I know who they are. Let’s call the biggest offender out.
Then celebrate those who choose the opposite, often more difficult route. That’s where our focus should be, because if we’re part of what makes them successful, surely it’ll encourage more of the ‘good stuff’.
