Playthrough with Akira. This game had seen a couple of ports released in the 1990s for the SEGA Saturn and PC, but this version's graphics are the most accurate to the arcade. There's no doubt on how much of an impact Virtua Fighter had on the fighting game genre, so it's nice to see it on the Astro City Mini.
This are some problems with this version though. I'd heard that during the replays the framerate decreases, which you can see in this video. But sometimes the framerate also dives during a fight, it doesn't seem to happen for very long but it does happen. I'm not sure if it's on certain stages only or what. Another minor glitch you'll see in this is Akira's eyes will sometimes remain closed if he gets hit -he'll only open them again during his win pose, or when the next round begins.
Anyway, the CPU in this game is, you guessed it, horrible. It gets super aggressive right from the start, and the input reading also begins early on. Sometimes it's like your moves lack a hitbox, you'll try to do a punch or kick and it just goes right the opponent as they counter it instantly. The controls for this game aren't great either -it can be difficult to get some of the special moves to work, even ones with easy to do inputs.
Thankfully there is an exploit you can use: neutral jump attacks. If you do a neutral jump, then hold forwards and press punch, the CPU is most likely going to take the hit. It can work with the kick button as well but generally it's the punch you want to use. You should be able to beat the first three opponents normally but from Kage and onwards this strategy is what you'll want to use if you want to do a one credit clear. It also works on Dural.
The Astro City Mini was released in Japan late on in 2020, and later got released elsewhere in 2021. I was initially really excited when it was announced, mainly because Virtua Fighter was going to be on it -I was hoping more Model 1 and maybe even some Model 2 games would be included. So it was pretty disappointing when Virtua Fighter ended up being the only Model system game on it at all.
It does include games that had never had console ports before, with Golden Axe: The Revenge of Death Adder being the most notable. But some of these games are awful, such as Dark Edge and Arabian Fight. And did it really need to have three different Columns games, but not a single OutRun or Hang-On game?
The games also all lack option settings of any kind, which is a surprising omission. I want to say that all games are on their default settings, but I know Rad Mobile isn't -you start the race with only 45 seconds, when you're supposed to have 60.
