Playthrough of the version included on Castlevania Anniversary Collection. This collection, which was released in 2019, features many of the Castlevania games from the 8 and 16 bit eras.
Despite making my own shrine for this game:

I’d never considered doing a playthrough of it myself. But after watching a few streams of @thegaminghellyoutubething playing it -go sub to their twitch here: twitch.tv/tepidsnake -I decided to give it a try. This game is widely seen as being one of the worst games in the series. I believe this was Konami’s first GameBoy game, so maybe they just didn’t know what the hell they were doing. But there are so many bad things with this game you have to wonder how they thought this was ok to release.
First things first: as mentioned previously, a lot of stuff in this game is terrible. If you get hit your whip’s power degrades, the weakest version of the whip takes longer to kill most enemies or damage bosses, so you want to try and keep it at least the second level throughout the game. This is extremely difficult to do because it is very easy to get hit.
The collision detection is also abysmal, there are a lot of jumps to make over bottomless pits and if you don’t know what you’re doing you’ll fall to your death even though it looks like you should make it. The trick is to get to the edge of the platform you want to jump from and have Christopher’s back leg on it, whilst his front leg is off it -if you’re setup like this you should make whatever jump you’re about to do.
If there are two things I can say I like about this game, the first would be the music. The level themes are pretty good, although the boss theme isn’t exactly Castlevania material to me. The other thing I like about this game is that it’s short. I reckon if you didn’t die once you could probably beat the entire game in around 25 minutes, but 30 isn’t too bad either.
I died twice, neither times were my fault. Both deaths were in the last level (I am personally very proud of not dying once in the third level), the first death was caused by Christopher falling through a platform instead of landing on it. The second death was caused by the game’s terrible collision detection. Everything else went pretty well, but some notes about the stages:
-At the start of the second level, immediately head right. What you ideally want is what happened here, none of the bats go near you, but they stay on screen. This will prevent another group of bats from spawning.
-At the start of the last level, do not jump forward and whip the candles. Do a stationary jump instead. This will prevent you from getting hit if one of the statues comes to life. The statues are random, by the way.
-You ideally want an upgraded whip for the corridor at 26:05, but if you haven’t got one, don’t fret. What you need to do is damage boost your way through here, which is done by facing away from the enemy and then letting them hit you. There are plenty of health items in this room so you should be able to make it.
