In 2001, texting wasn't huge yet in the US, but it was growing as young people acquired phones at younger and younger ages. Texting works great in places where you can't speak or hear due to noise or requirements for silence (libraries, theaters, classrooms).

Here Verizon tries to encourage people to have entire multi-way conversations with their friends over text. I don't think multi-way messaging took off, but texting sure did.
