We are trialing a group of New Mexican Landrace chile peppers this season, and we have over 20 plants of Cañoncito Chile. This hot pepper is a "landrace" chile from Dixon, NM. Traditionally it is grown in irrigated fields from DIRECT SEEDING. This means the pepper does not have the extra time indoors to grow into a seedling before the beginning of the outdoor growing season, it must grow its entire plant and mature peppers to ripeness in the short growing season of Dixon's high altitude (6000 ft) Northern New Mexican location. Selection has made Cañoncito an exceptionally early ripening pepper.
