Though some of this has been covered before I have been getting questions about how I alter certain props. I do this using the opacity channel if and when the mapping of the model allows. The only way to find out is to experiment with the eyedropper tool and opacity sliders.
Some props share a single map and opacity is not an option as it makes the entire prop invisible but in most cases opacity can alter the looks of a prop allowing you to add items to suit your needs.
