The US should lead by example and help stop abusive transplant practices in China—that's the message from a recent forum in Washington DC. Doctors from a medical advocacy group want US lawmakers to adopt House Resolution 281. Among other things, it would press the Chinese regime to immediately end its practice of harvesting organs from prisoners of conscience.
[Dr. Damon Noto, Doctors against Forced Organ Harvesting]
"Probably in the past 13 years, the transplant community became very alarmed about what was going on in China."
Alarmed, because independent investigators estimate tens of thousands of persecuted Falun Gong practitioners have been killed, their organs removed and sold to domestic and overseas patients.
Falun Gong, also known as Falun Dafa, is a Chinese spiritual discipline. Since 1999, its adherents have been subjected to extensive persecution by the Chinese regime.
In 2006, allegations surfaced that military hospitals were killing them for their organs.
[Dr. Mai He, Executive Director, Doctors Against Forced Organ Harvesting]
"Time-wise, the increase in number of organ transplant in China actually paralleled with the persecution."
In June, Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-Fla.) and Representative. Robert Andrews (D-N.J.) introduced House Resolution 281 in the House Committee on Foreign Affairs.
[Dr. Damon Noto, Spokesman, Doctors against Forced Organ Harvesting]
"When the US Congress makes a motion, makes a resolution, it makes it easier for other organizations, medical organizations, countries, states, to enact their own regulations and laws. A lot of the time they follow suit, they see what the US is doing, and then they move. If we can get this moving, it can actually impact, globally, many things.
Guest speaker at the forum, Levi Browde, says the effects would even reach into China.
[Levi Browde, Executive Director, Falun Dafa Information Center]
"Inside China, we've seen resolutions like this where people literally are persecutors, in prison camps, police officers, see that the United States Congress is stating things so explicitly, it'll give them real pause to do what they're doing."
House Resolution 281 would be the first in the US to press the Chinese regime to end forced organ harvesting. It also wants Congress to warn US citizens that if they go to China for an organ, it may have come from a prisoner of conscience.
Once the Resolution gets enough co-sponsors, it can be introduced to the House floor for voting.

![Free Chinas HMMA Nominations Coincide with Producers Wedding
Tonight I am here at a screening of Free China: The Courage to Believe a documentary about two Falun Gong practitioners who were persecuted for their beliefs and went through Chinas forced labor camp system. Now Free Chinas been screened all over the world but what makes this night so special is the fact that it coincides with the producers wedding.
Free Chinas Executive Producer Kean Wong had two big milestones in less than 24 hours. The day before, Wong found out that the theme song of Free China had been nominated for two Hollywood Music in Media Awards.
[Kean Wong, Executive Producer, Free China]:
It was a great surprise and in many ways a great wedding present as well.
Free Chinas theme song The Courage to Believe was composed by Tony Chen, with lyrics by Kean Wong and director Michael Perlman and sung by actress Qorianka
Kilcher. It was nominated for the Best Vocals in the Music Genre category and for the Best Song in Indie Film.
And this isnt the first time this has happened.
Last year Free Chinas soundtrack, also composed by Tony Chen, was nominated by the HMMA for Best Soundtrack Album.
But the focus of the night was on the atrocities in China, something that has now become very personal for Wong. His wife, a Falun Gong practitioner, is now applying for asylum after leaving China.
[Xixi Deng, Falun Gong Practitioner, Wife of Kean Wong]:
Through this movie I hope that people can understand that in China there are still millions of Falun Gong practitioners whose families are broken because they wont give up their beliefs. I hope that through this movie, more people can understand what is happening.
Deng has been visited by the 610 office, a gestapo like secret police force in China that was created to carry out the persecution of Falun Gong in China. They threatened not only her, but her family back in China who do not practice Falun Gong.
Falun Gong is a peaceful meditation and qigong practice that is based on the principles of truth, compassion, and tolerance. It is practiced freely all over the world except in China where it has been persecuted for the last 14 years.
[Melody Bryant, Co-Host of Free China Screening]:
I wanted to get the word out about about this movie, about the Falun Gong, and hopefully make some changes in the US that would have an effect on our relationship with China and make a difference in that country.
Deng is applying for asylum in the US and if her asylum status is granted, she plans to stay here and continue to work on the promotion of Free China: The Courage to Believe.

![Brother of Chinese Activist, Chen Guangcheng, Beaten by Hired Thugs
The brother of blind Chinese activist Chen Guangcheng was been beaten up in eastern Shandong province Thursday. Chen Guangfu says he believes the two men were thugs hired by authorities to continue the harassment against his family.
In a telephone interview with NTD, Chen Guangfu described the attack yesterday morning.
[Chen Guangfu, Brother of Blind Activist Chen Guangcheng]:
Around 10am, I was traveling on a scooter along State Route 205, then a black sedan overtook me and stopped in front of me. I had to get out of the car, then two young men came down from the car and started beating me, they didnt say anything.
Chen Guangfus family has been targeted by Chinese authorities ever since his brother testified before the US Congress last month. Theyve had stones, dead chickens, and beer bottles thrown into their yard.
Now, with Chen Guangcheng planning a trip to Taiwan, Chen Guangfu believes the Chinese regime is targeting his family to stop his brothers trip.
Chen Guangfu says his family now fears for their life. They plan to petition in Beijing if Chen Guangcheng does end up making that trip to Taiwan.

![Sydney, Australia Seeks to Attract More Chinese Tourists
In a bid to attract more Chinese tourists, Sydney, Australia has launched a new Mandarin Climb to the top of the Harbour Bridge, with Mandarin speaking guides to lead Chinese tourists.
To launch the new Mandarin Climb, four players climbed atop the bridge to play the popular Asian game of Mahjong on Wednesday.
[Tony Liu, Mahjong Player]
After all there is been a lot of Chinese tourists coming in to Australia in the last 10 years and I think its a good move to introduce the Mandarin Climb.
Chinese tourists are a major force of Australias tourism industry. BridgeClimb Chairman Paul Cave has seen a surge in Chinese tourists first hand.
[Paul Cave, Chairman and Founder, BridgeClimb]
Its been a fantastic growth coming in from China. In fact in our own case I think the number coming to BridgeClimb is up 30-35 percent from last year. The rate at which its going up Im sure China will be such a huge market for us in the years ahead and probably in the next 5 years. I imagine that will be the situation for us.
Australias tourism sector has been booming, outpacing other areas of the economy. In the past decade, Chinese visitors have more than tripled their visits, breaking all records.
According to the countrys Tourism Forecasting Committee, China will stay as the main driver of tourism growth with forecasts of 15.9 percent this financial year.
To further cement this trend, China Southern Airlines will start flying A380 super-jumbo jets on its popular Guangzhou-Sydney route later this year.
In 2011-2012, direct tourism gross domestic product increased by 5.3 percent to 41 billion US dollars, slightly surpassing the nations nominal growth rate of 4.9 percent.

![Africa Rethinks China Trade Links
Over the past decade Africas economy has become a force to contend with.
Rich with natural resources its fast becoming an attractive investment opportunity as developed countries continue to battle economic headwinds.
China recognised its potential long before many others.
But now Africa is scrutinizing their trading partnership.
Many business leaders are no longer prepared to swap African oil, coal and iron ore for chinese manufactured imports.
They say Chinas sapping their own manufacturing sector, and would like to see shared skills and technology as well.
Tendai Biti is Zimbabwes Finance Minister
[Tendai Biti, Zimbabwe Finance Minister]:
The reality as well is that they are not comrades, their companies are there to make profits like everyone else, and therefore its important for everyone to have your best lawyers, your best accountants, best advisors, when you are negotiating with them.
Africas textiles business in particular is under huge stress.
Diana Layfield, Chief Executive of Standard Chartered Bank Africa says Africa needs to make its natural resources go further
[Diana Layfield, Chief Executive of Standard Chartered Bank Africa]:
Many Africans need to think more about the value added activities within their own countries, in nigeria there is a fantastic example, the Nigerians are one of the largest importers of tomatoes in the world, they export the tomatoes to Italy and they are one of the largest importers of tomato paste from Italy. There is no conceivable reason why Nigeria can not do all that value added activity in Nigeria.
A recent visit by Chinas president to meet his South African counterpart shows relations are strong, and some analysts say that China has a MORAL duty to help Africa.
The question now is whether China feels secure enough to share its expertise with what could become its future competitors.
