We have an update for you about Bin bin the 6 year old boy who had his eyes gouged out. We told you in our last report that Dennis Lam a doctor from Hong Kong offered free treatment for bin bin to be fitted with implants.
We are happy to report that bin bin underwent surgery for the implants and doctors say that surgery was a success and the implants will not restore his sight but will help to restoring his appearance. Doctors were also extremely impressed by the courage bin bin showed prior to surgery. (QUOTE FROM DR. LAM)
Patients in such cases can usually be discharged after a few days, but since the family is from Shanxi, Lam said they would stay in the hospital until prosthetic eye pieces could be placed on the implants. This will be done in the next four to six weeks.
Lam's next plan is to teach bin bin to use a navigation device - worn on the forehead or tongue - in the next few months. It captures images and translates them into electronic signals that stimulate the skin. The new technology from the US and Japan has not been used on the mainland or in Hong Kong.
