Hydrophlox chrosomus (syn. Notropis chrosomus), the Rainbow Shiner, is native to the southeastern USA, especially Alabama, northwestern Georgia and southeastern Tennessee. Its natural range lies mainly within the Mobile Bay drainage, including the Coosa, Cahaba, Alabama and upper Black Warrior river systems.

In the wild it inhabits clear, low-turbidity creeks and small rivers, often spring-fed, with good current and high oxygen levels. Typical substrates consist of gravel, cobbles and sand, especially around riffles, runs and flowing pools.

Water conditions vary considerably with season and location. In a studied population in northern Georgia, temperatures ranged from about 4°C in winter to 25°C in summer, with spawning occurring at approximately 16–25°C.

A practical representation of its natural conditions is roughly pH 6.5–7.5, soft to moderately hard water, with clean, oxygen-rich water and noticeable flow being more important than an exact hardness value
