U.S. Department of Defense to adopt ‘ZERO TRUST’ approach to purchasing microelectronics
U.S. Department of Defense in a news release on May 19 said, the agency will adopt the “Zero Trust” approach to buying Microelectronics.
According to the report, Pentagon's defense research and engineering for modernization director, Mark J. Lewis said, the agency’s zero trust approach to buying microelectronics will allow the agency to gain access to the most modern technology.
According to U.S. DOD, Mark J. Lewis said, Microelectronics are in nearly everything, including the complex weapons systems the Defense Department buys, such as the F-35 joint strike fighter.
Mark J. Lewis said, in the mid-1990s, DOD adopted a "trusted foundry" model for procuring microelectronics.
Lewis said "The idea [was] that in order to deliver parts that we could trust, we would enable foundries that would manufacture our microelectronics where we had control over every step of the process — or so we thought,". "That model, we think, has failed."
Now, Lewis said, the department looks instead to a "zero trust" approach to purchasing microelectronics. That assumes that nothing the department buys is safe, and that everything must be validated before it can be used.
By using "zero trust," Lewis said, the department will be able to gain access to the most modern technology.

On November 25, during the turnover, acceptance and blessing ceremony, at Heracleo Alano Naval Base in Cavite, Phil Navy vice admiral Giovanni Carlo Bacordo received the ScanEagle Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) from the US through acting deputy chief of Mission Kimberly Kelly and Representatives from the US Embassy in the Philippines’ Joint U.S. Military Assistance Group (JUSMAG).
According to the U.S. embassy, the newly turned-over system which costs 710 Million pesos, will provide and increase intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities to the 71st Maritime Unmanned Aerial Reconnaissance Squadron (71 MUARS) of the Philippine Fleet’s Naval Air Wing.
