The Philippine Navy has set a new date for the commissioning of its first-ever missile-capable frigate and is set on July 10, 2020.

President Duterte, who has expressed interest to board the warship, is also expected to grace the ceremony.

Once it's commissioned into service as BRP Jose Rizal (FF-150), its crew will undergo training to prepare for deployment to Hawaii on August 17-31 to take part in the Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) 2020 exercise hosted by the US Pacific Fleet.

RIMPAC is the world's largest international maritime exercise, it is designed to foster and sustain cooperative relationships, critical to ensuring the safety of sea lanes and security in support of a free and open Indo-Pacific region.

The exercise, which takes place in the waters surrounding the Hawaiian Islands, is a unique training platform designed to enhance interoperability and strategic maritime partnerships.

This year’s exercise will include multinational anti-submarine warfare, maritime intercept operations, and live-fire training events.

The participation of the Philippine Navy’s future BRP Jose Rizal in this year’s RIMPAC is expected to enhance and improve its crew’s ability to operate with other naval allies as well as hone its skills in operating the vessel in its full capability.

In the 2018 rim of the Pacific exercise, the Philippine navy contingent consisted of the BRP Davao Del Sur (LD-602), frigate BRP Andres Bonifacio (FF-17), an AgustaWestland AW-109 naval helicopter, and around 700 sailors and marines.

Altogether, RIMPAC 2018 was participated by 46 ships and submarines, 200 aircraft, and 25,000 troops from 25 nations.
