The acquisition and development of a submarine force for the Philippines remain to be one of the Philippine Navy's top priorities. The Philippine Navy with its planned acquisition of its first submarines appears to be getting closer to its target.

In December 2019, the Secretary of National Defense of the
Philippines Delfin Lorenzana announced that the Scorpène
-class submarine of France fits the requirements of the
Philippine Navy.

Meanwhile, on October 19, 2020, Naval Group CEO Pierre-Eric Pommellet confirmed that the French defense manufacturer is actively in close contact with the Philippine authorities.

And recently on November 27, 2020, Naval Group announced the opening of an office in Manila. In a news release, the firm said the opening signifies the first step of a long-term commitment of cooperation and partnership in developing naval capabilities for the country.
